A Short History of FPS Computer Games

Following a brief hiatus in the 1980s, gaming was once more popular thanks to the advent of the Nintendo Entertainment System. The system was a collection of basic games like Super Mario, Mega Man and the well-known Final Fantasy. Although they were not as basic as the games were, they were superior to the games provided by the predecessors, and gaming was revived all over the globe.

As we’ve moved on from the 2D time period that featured side-scrolling shooters, things have changed a bit different. The games are becoming more realistic, their characters becoming increasingly precise, and the worlds are becoming more fluid. Many things have occurred and it’s impossible to cover every single one of them, so instead, we’ll take a look at the development in one of the most well-known genres called the first person shooter, or FPS.

The Beginning

Wolfenstein The first First Person Shooter released by ID Software and Apogee. It was a two-dimensional shooter that told the story of BJ, a British agent called BJ in his search for freedom from Castle Wolfenstein. The demo came out in 1992, and featured eight levels and a secret level accessible by the first floor.

Blake Stone: Intended to be an expansion of Wolfenstein but was later changed to an independent shooter that had a couple of sequels.

Half Life: Gordan Freeman and his trusty crowbar set an arc towards the future with the Quake engine from ID Software and show that games don’t need to be divided into different levels.

Red Faction Red Faction: The first game to feature fully destructable terrain, which follows the fate of miners who are oppressed on the planet red.

Today

DOOM 3: This eagerly awaited remake of DOOM with a brand-new engine was a complete disappointment, but at its day it was an eminent indicator of what the future might look like. ID Software had once again demonstrated to the world what could be possible.

Prey: This game featured an amazing storyline and was an extremely different game. Many people did not like it, however everybody is waiting for the sequel.

Half Life 2: The long-awaited sequel to Half Life 2. Based on the original engine and featuring a complete campaign, which was broken down into short segments the game took players through the journey of their lives. It was followed by two separate expansions, and players are expected to get a fourth installment of this series in the near future.

Red Faction 2 Red Faction 2: The second installment in the series Red Faction which proved to be a failure, however, it was a necessary sequel to the series.

Far Cry: One of the first open-world shooters with a realistic setting. It was followed by a sequel and remake for Xbox. Xbox platform.
